MILE 10

WHOSE WEDDING IS THIS?

It's really just a moment. A few minutes that you should remember for the rest of your life. The moment when you lean into each other, smell their scent, notice for the first time a tiny freckle or vein that didn't throb like that before. You may feel a little dizzy when you think of what one little word changes. But all you have to do is look the other person in the eye, make sure with a handshake that you really want to do it, take a breath, and then say yes twice.

Paving the big, unpaved road,
green with grass,
two palaces standing to the left,
two palaces off to the right.
The buildings are vast, huge.
in the silent square,
and look so dark and slumbering,
as if they were asleep and only asleep.

I want to buy this

The quoted verses are from the pen of Jan Neruda, a writer and poet who grew up in the Lesser Town and whose sights, sounds, smells and inhabitants he forever imprinted in letters. He was born right across the street from the hotel where Judith and Jan stayed. In the midst of planning the wedding, they stopped and asked the question: Whose wedding is this anyway?

They searched within themselves for an honest answer. They wished to have the day to themselves, to savour every minute of their new status, to just wander the streets of the Lesser Town, in the shadow of the majestic palaces, to let the solemnity of the moment come upon them, and at the same time not to take themselves so seriously when confronted with the past centuries. To be together, not to lose each other.
